  STATEN ISLAND GIVING CIRCLE

SCHEDULE

Picture

The Staten Island Giving Circle holds monthly meetings on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. at The Old Bermuda Inn.  We sometimes need to change the day, if necessary, but most often we try to keep it on Wednesday evenings.  Watch for announcements.

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 – We have a huge team of ladies who live in the Tides community to thank for efforts above and beyond in supplying menu money and food prizes for BOTH May and June senior luncheons at Canterbury House on Bay Street. Joan Calabrisotto was instrumental in introducing some of her many friends from the Tides to our senior luncheon initiative, and these ladies really piled on.

Wednesday, June 5, 2013 – First, our humble thanks to Carol Lundrigan from Staten Island Soroptimists for nominating us for one of their 2013 community service awards. We have been named one of the fortunate winners and will be presented with a $1,500 award at dinner at the Staaten (6:30 p.m.) on June 5. I’m very happy to say we have a group of 12 Giving Circle members planning to accompany me. Hopefully we will be able to collaborate with the Soroptimists on a couple of initiatives as we go forward this year.

JUNE 8-9 CAMP GOOD GRIEF – We are so happy to report that one of our members, Angie Fallon, has volunteered to be the night nurse at this June 8-9 session of Linda Steinman’s Camp Good Grief. Linda reported that as of Wednesday there were two slots still left for eligible children at the camp. Contact Linda at: lksias45@verizon.net if you know of a child available for these two days.

Friday, June 14, 2013 – PLEASE LEAVE THIS DATE OPEN ON YOUR SOCIAL CALENDARS.  I AM TRYING ARRANGE SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR YOU AS MY THANKS TO YOU FOR ALL YOUR KIND RESPONSES TO OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.  Watch for notices as I get things organized.  This would serve as our June meeting.  It’s unusual for us to meet on Friday, but let’s see what happens.

***THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2013 – THANKS-FOR-GIVING DINNER, 7:00 p.m., Canterbury House, 1331 Bay Street. Please know that this will serve as our June meeting but there will be no meeting agenda. This is MY opportunity to turn the tables a little and thank all of you for your help through the year. We’ll suspend the charity raffle; there will be no “bring alongs”, this will be an evening just to eat and enjoy each other’s company. You’ll note that the dinner is on Thursday (hey, Thanksgiving is on Thursday, right?). About 60 of you have signed on for this evening so far and I’m hoping for a total of 75-80. The seniors of Canterbury House will be joining us for dessert/coffee. This is the senior facility where we provide lunch the last Wednesday of every month. We also instituted a lending library which you can take a look at on June 13. If you have an extra gently-used book or DVD ready to surrender, please bring them that evening. I have a few very nice door prizes to give away.
PLEASE NOTE that parking is a bit tricky at this Bay Street venue. We CANNOT use the parking spots behind the church; they are reserved for residents. We will be parking along side the church and on the street and walking back to the hall. Therefore, I recommend that you car pool (I will be sending out the list of attendees and you should try desperately to cram as many people into one car as possible. Please abide by the church’s regulations; we are guests and can certainly walk the few steps from cars to hall.
PLEASE RSVP TO GET ON THIS DINNER LIST.

Wednesday, July 17, 2013 – This date will be our July monthly meeting at the Old Bermuda Inn at 7 p.m. Our guest speaker for this evening will be Michael Pfeiffer, Development Officer, from The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. We met Mr. Pfeiffer when we went in April to prepare dinner for the families who were staying at this facility at the time while tending to their sick children. We couldn’t have been more impressed with the facility or the staff. I’m so happy to know that Mr. Pfeiffer will talk to all that his organization offers. This is probably one of the world’s most wonderful ideas ever.

*The Staten Island Giving Circle is now accepting donations through our website.  Please be advised that we are not a 501(3)(c) organization simply because the paperwork would be voluminous trying to track $10 and $20 donations individually.  You can, if you choose, earmark your donations for your charity of choice (for a raffle pull) or tell us simply to “add to general fund” for community outreach activities.
